Dana
Point Harbor NOW! is proud to announce that we have been hard at work
gathering signatures of support from local residents who want to see
the Revitalization of Dana Point Harbor happen Now!
Members of our Steering Committee attended a Coastal Hearing on November
13, 2008 where they urged the Coastal Commission to approve the Local
Coastal Plan Amendment that would allow the City of Dana Point to give
its final approval of the Revitalization Plan so that construction to
the proposed land side improvements can commence in 2010.
Carlos Olvera, President of the Dana Point Historical
Society said of the Revitalization Plan: “I
particularly want the improvements in the area where the restaurants
and the new parking structure will be built, which will not only update
the facilities for handicap access but also place convenient rest rooms
near the public areas and improve the water run off entering the harbor.”
Pat Fairbanks, President of the Dana Point Civic Association
made the following statement to the Commissioners:
“I needed to let you know how important the revitalization
of the harbor and particularly the land side of the harbor is to this
community. As a long time resident of Dana Point, I can tell you that
there is a wide and diverse group of people who use the various amenities
of this harbor but the property is in need of major improvements. The
harbor is an important recreational amenity of Dana Point and provides
coastal access for walkers, park users, visitors who want to enjoy restaurants
and shopping along with the sport fishing, Catalina flyer and recreational
water sports. These improvements can’t happen without the approval
of the Coastal Commission.”
Jim Miller, President of the Dana Point Harbor Association
reminded the Commissioners that the: ”harbor
is an important recreational amenity for Dana Point and the County of
Orange. But it is also dilapidated and run down, in need of revitalization.
The County has been very collaborative in their efforts to engage the
various interest groups in the harbor and I urge you to look favorably
upon the land side plan that you will be reviewing shortly. You may
have been urged to combine the future marina modifications with the
land side plan, but the land side plan has construction level environmental
clearance, while the marina plan alternatives are still being reviewed
in the environmental process. The land side plan needs to go forward
NOW!”
Thank you for supporting DPHN! We are making progress, but we still
need your help! The Revitalization Plan is going before the Coastal
Commission in April 2009. Please help us by getting your friends and
family to sign our petition on our website:
